While many of us will probably resort to sitting around and watching Netflix, there is a great number of ways to keep busy and have fun during summer vacation.

One of the best things to do this summer is to read a book. Reading material is fairly accessible since you can get it from the library, find it online, or buy it from the bookstore. Whether you are a regular reader or not, there is a good book out there for everyone.

Of course, the options are not restricted to conventional novels. There are also audiobooks for anyone who wants to keep busy while listening to a story, as well as comic books, graphic novels and manga for anyone looking for a quick story to enjoy.

Another excellent way to pass time is to try cooking. Even if you are not someone who usually spends time in the kitchen, anyone can look up a quick and easy recipe online. This is a great way to find the inner cook within yourself and have a delicious reward when you are done.

One of the best things about cooking is that it is not a solitary activity. Cooking with friends and family is a great way to spend time with people you care about.

Freshman Sriya Kandula says, “I am not a really great baker, but I still have fun making different desserts sometimes. I will find some recipe online, and sometimes my friends will come over to help. Even if the recipe does not turn out the way it was supposed to, we still have a blast just messing around in the kitchen for a few hours.”

There is also the option to get a job this summer. Many high school students take advantage of this opportunity every summer, and for a good reason.

Summer jobs not only keep you busy over break, but also have many great benefits. One of the most prominent would be that getting a job means getting paid, which is something every high school student looks forward to, especially since it could help one save up for college.

These jobs also provide insight into what it means to be in a working environment, no matter what kind of job you decide to take. In addition, this is also a good way to make friends who live close by and share at least one similarity with you.

Freshman Caitlin Jubin says, “I usually tutor over the summer, and I love doing it every year. Not only is it a well-paying and relatively easy job, but I also get to spend time with children, which is something I find enjoyable and entertaining.”

Something similar to getting a job that you can do is take classes over the summer and use the break time as an opportunity to learn something new.

If you take a class in something you are interested in and do not mind a little extra work, this is a great option for you to do something productive. This can be anything from learning a new instrument, taking classes in the various arts, and even potentially taking some early college classes at nearby universities.

Just like getting a job, taking a class over the summer is one way to meet new people who share common interests with you.

Another way to avoid getting bored would be to try keeping a journal. This journal can have written entries about what you want to accomplish over summer, accounts of what you have already done, sketches, poems, photographs, and even grocery lists.

A journal can be as creative as a person wants it to be, so you could spend hours just decorating it. This is also a good way to store memories and record any interesting activities you participated in over the summer.

Of course, these are just a few of the many things that you can do to keep busy during the summertime. You may decide to take part in at least a few of these activities, or you might be content to just do one or two during your vacation. Either way, having a list of things to do is a fail-safe way to have an exciting summer.

How do you plan on spending your summer vacation?
