Danielle Bregoli — stage name Bhad Bhabie — landed a top female rap artist nomination for the 2018 Billboard Awards on April 17, 2018.

The 15-year-old viral star is up against huge stars including Cardi B and Nicki Minaj.

Bregoli’s ego might just be a tad bit bigger than her attitude. She told TMZ, “By being nominated, I already won…. Nicki just has attitude.”

For those who are unaware of who Bregoli is, one may know her better by her catchphrase, “Cash me outside, how bout dat?”

This was an expression Bregoli used while being interviewed about stealing her mother’s car. Bregol’s statement was her claim to fame after her appearance on Dr. Phil in September 2016.

A few months later, her popular catchphrase became a meme and viral sensation, prompting thousands of tweets, videos, and remixes all over the internet. Currently, her video on Dr. Phil has earned over 46 million views.

One may wonder how has Bregoli’s rebellious behavior earned her a nomination for the Billboard Awards.

Since rocketing to fame from her “Dr. Phil” episode, she released her own line of “cash me ousside” merchandise, the majority of which is currently sold out.

She used her fame to pursue a rap career with the name Bhad Bhabie. After a YouTube video for her single “These Heaux” gathered tens of millions of views, she followed up in October with “Hi Bich,” which debuted at No. 68 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her song was the highest premiere that week, according to Billboard. She was also signed to Atlantic Records on a multi-million dollar, multi-album deal.

Aside from two of her singles making the Billboard Hot 100, Bregoli’s Bhad Bhabie YouTube channel features her music, which has almost 4 million subscribers. It has amassed over 204 million views between the first four videos alone.

The stats suggest her music has been seriously popular, but some people’s reactions depict confusion and hatred.

Freshmen Eesha Patel said, “Her nomination is a disgrace to the rap world. There are so many female rappers who actually deserve the chance to win instead of a girl who is just a meme.”

Despite becoming a social media star almost overnight, Bregoli’s rise to fame has not been without controversy.

The now 15-year-old was sentenced to five years probation after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including grand theft auto, possession of marijuana, and filing a false police report.

Freshman Kamryn Sokoloski says, “Danielle Bregoli is only famous for her defiant behavior, and if she wins, she is only promoting rebellion.”

As mentioned before, Bregoli is nominated in the category along with Minaj and Cardi B. Minaj has had 86 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, 15 of which were top 10 hits.

Meanwhile, Cardi B has had 17 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 and her number one hit, “Bodak Yellow,” marked what was only the second time in history that a female rapper has topped the charts on her own.

Ultimately, Bregoli’s nomination for a top female artist award demonstrates how sensational and impactful an internet meme can become.

Do you believe that Danielle Bregoli should win the Billboard music awards? Why or why not?
